If, like me, you've always wanted to know a bit more about the international monetary system, the Federal Reserve (FED), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), floating currencies, and the fundamentals of a gold standard, then this is the book for you. Based on his far-reaching knowledge and an incredible insight into all things monetary, the book's author explains world history from its earliest days down to modern times from the perspective of gold. When viewed in this manner, many obscure and seemingly incomprehensible actions and events suddenly come into focus, and it becomes apparent that most of man's trials, tribulations, wars, etc. have been, are being, and will continue to be caused by the actions of the world's leader's in their vain attempts to deviate from, debase, and manipulate their monetary systems for their own purposes. If you read the book, and you should, you will likely find that it is one of the most interesting, informative, enlightening, disheartening, disgusting, encouraging, and disconcerting books you have ever read.

It is INTERESTING because it tells the story of man's efforts down through the centuries to establish a reliable and trustworthy basis for commerce, intercourse, and exchange between individuals, groups, villages, cities, and nations. It is INFORMATIVE because it traces the path which led inevitably to gold and shows that in all of mankind's history only a monetary system based on a gold standard has been able to produce a stable monetary system for any significant period of time (centuries). The book is ENLIGHTENING because it explains, among other things; what the intended functions of the FED and the IMF were, how they operate today, and what happens when there is no universally recognized and immutable standard upon which to base the relative values of the world's currencies. If you're an American, you'll find it DISHEARTENING when you learn that the United States (which we have been led to believe is what Ronald Reagan once called, "a shining city on a hill") has, through political corruption, inane fiscal policies, and monetary ineptitude, caused more harm to other nations than virtually any other nation on earth. As for disgust, what could be more DISGUSTING than to find that if the IMF hasn't sold its collective soul to the devil, it has certainly sold it to the international bankers in the developed nations, and that it has routinely used its power to destroy the economies of one developing nation after another for the benefit of those banks. It is ENCOURAGING, though, to learn, as we do in the final chapter, that it is still possible to return the world to some semblance of monetary order and permanent stability by returning to a gold standard, thereby diminishing the power of the FED and the IMF by returning those organizations to the roles for which they were intended. It is rather DISCONCERTING, however, to be told that the Fed and the IMF are powerful, well entrenched, and politically connected bureaucracies which have no interest in giving up their awesome power.

If this book was made required reading for every student and a primary requirement for high school graduation, this would be a much better country. The American people would be better informed and would not only understand what has happened in the past but would also understand what is happening today, why it is happening, and what must be done about it. And, eventually, America would be a better country with more freedom, and, along with the rest of the world, would be a more prosperous, and happier place in which to live.

Our best hope, according to this author, is that in some far distant future a new leader might come on the scene who has the vision and foresight to return America and the world at large to a gold standard. And he explains just how such a thing might be accomplished. (It doesn't appear to be as difficult as it would seem.) This may never happen, but two things are certain: 1) history certainly looks a lot different when viewed from the perspective of GOLD, and 2) everyone should read this book.
